When your team collaborates on Feishu, manages R&D in ZenTao, and sends verification codes via SES, email is often the most underestimated link on the path to going global. It is the first touchpoint with overseas customers, and the official channel for contracts, invoices, and notifications. One email landing in the spam folder can mean a lost inquiry or a delayed order.

Self-hosted email looks controllable, but the cost is real. Open-source solutions like iRedMail and Mailcow can be deployed quickly, but the real challenge is operations: misconfigured SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records immediately hurt deliverability; IP reputation requires long-term warm-up; security patches, anti-spam rules, and log troubleshooting demand ongoing effort. For a 50-person team, engineering hours spent on email infrastructure are better spent on the product.

Feishu's native email is the lighter choice. The free Basic plan supports 50 mailbox accounts and 100GB of shared storage after domain verification, with mail sent and received directly inside Feishu—no tool switching. Public mailboxes like support@ and hr@ can be managed by multiple members, ideal for customer service and external contact. For integrating with external systems such as ZenTao, the public mailbox's SMTP service works well; after domain verification, the Basic plan allows up to 400 outbound emails per day, more than enough for internal notifications.

SES suits high-volume sending, not corporate email. It excels at verification codes and marketing campaigns with reliable deliverability, but daily member correspondence, calendar integration, and contact management are not its focus. Use Feishu for corporate email and SES for system notifications—each playing its proper role is the right architecture.

The core of selection is matching your stage. For teams under 50 people already using Feishu, enable Feishu's native email first: zero additional cost, seamless collaboration integration, and full domain ownership. When storage or sending volume becomes a bottleneck, then evaluate upgrading to a commercial plan or bringing in a dedicated enterprise email provider. Competitiveness in going global lies in product and responsiveness—infrastructure like email should be as worry-free as possible. Save your energy for customers, not for MX records.
